Short Service Commission

If the Indian Air Force grants you the Short Service Commission, it means that you have been accepted in service for a period of ten years. Depending upon your performance, Air Force requirements and your inclination to continue, you can extend your tenure by five years.

Thereafter, you can extend your tenure by another five years or retire at forty whichever comes first. The Short Service Commission is granted to both men and women.

Permanent Commission
If you receive the Permanent Commission from the Indian Air Force, it means that you have been accepted in service for life. You will undergo a period of training for 52 weeks, during which time, you will be given the status of Flight Cadet.

After you have successfully completed your training, you will join the Air Force in the rank of Flying Officer. Only men are granted the Permanent Commission.


INDIAN AIR FORCE

Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics)

Aeronautical engineering (Electronics) responsible for the communication and signals required on the Air Force station, preventive maintenance and servicing of aircraft, repair and overhaul of aircrafts, etc.

To join IAF as an aeronautical engineer (electronics), you should have 60% or above marks. The educational qualifications could be in any one of the following-

  • BE/B.Tech in Electronics/Telecommunication / Electrical / Electrical Communication / Electronics & Communication / Instrumentation / Computer Science & Engineering or a combination of these subjects
  • Diploma in Electronics from Madras Institute of Technology
  • B.Tech in Radio Physics and Electronics / Optics and Opto Electronics
  • M.Sc Degree in Physics (With Electronics) / Electronics / Computer Science / Computer Application / MCA with Maths, Physics and Electronics at graduation level or M.Sc. Tech in Electronics and Radio Engineering
  • Section A&B Examination of the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (India) in Electrical, Electronics or Telecommunication subjects
  • Graduate Membership Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers with subjects of Section A & full subjects of Section B by actual studies (Maths, Applied Electronics and Circuits, Principals of Communication Engineering, Transmission lines and Networks)


    How to Apply

    The first stage is to watch out for the advertisement which appears twice a year- April and October in the leading newspapers and the employment News.

    If you fulfil the eligibility criteria and your- application is complete in all respects you can go to the next step of appearing for the Engineering Knowledge Test - EKT.

    After successfully clearing the EKT, you will receive a call letter to report to any one of the Air Force Selection Boards located at Dehradun, Varanasi or Mysore.

    Here you will be required to undergo a series of tests designed to assess your Officer Like Qualities - OLQ. Technical Branch tests: Day 1 - Intelligence Tests/ Psychological Tests - written tests that are conducted by a Psychologist.

    Day 2 & 3 - Group tests - Interactive indoor and outdoor tests involving physical activities Day 4 - Interview

    Day 5 - Conference - At the conference held on the last day, all the assessors i.e. the Psychologist, Ground Testing Officer and the Interviewing Officer, discuss your personality and decide on recommending you or not.

    Those recommended by the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) will be required to fill up certain documents at the Boards and subsequently move to the next step of clearing a medical examination.

    An All India Merit List is compiled on the basis of your performance at the AFSB and subject to being medically fit. Based on the vacancies available, Air HQ would issue joining instructions to join Air Force Academy for the training.

    Pay and Allowances

    Your salary in the Technical Branch would be approx Rs 17,900 per month. Besides which you will be entitled to the following perks and benefits:

    Free Living Accommodation, Insurance Cover of Rupees 20 Lakhs, Annual Leave of 60 days and 20 days of casual leave, Leave Travel Concession for you and your family, Liberal Loans for purchase of cars, computer or a house from the Air Force Group Insurance Society, government loans and loans from the Indian Air Force Benevolent Association, Medical Facilities, Ration, Recreational Facilities, Excellent schooling facilities in addition to concession of tuition fee, and free / concessional school transport will be provided to your children, Canteen Facilities which entitle you to shop at concessional rates from CSD Canteens all over the Country, Opportunities For Higher Learning to enhance your skills and after Retirement Benefits like pension, medical facilities, use of the canteen etc.

    If you want to become a Pilot you have to apply to the Flying Branch of the Air Force

    University Entry Scheme
    If you are in your final or pre-final year of engineering, you can join the Indian Air Force through the University Entry Scheme. You will be entitled to a stipend during your final year. Those selected for Permanent Commission would receive a Flying Officer's basic pay as stipend, while those selected for Short Service Commission would receive half that amount. The basic pay of a Flying Officer is Rs. 8250/- per month. The University Entry scheme is open only to men.
